"Night Operations, where students are trained to become leaders."

Chika Nnamani

History

In 1988 Chika Nnamani, at the time was Associate Director for Housing, believed that Illinois State University students were responsible enough to monitor the residence halls in place of a declining staff of full-time employees known as Residence Hall Attendants. Chika began proving his point as he implemented a pilot program in West Campus.

As a result of this success, Chika, as the Associate Director for Housing was able to launch his vision to include all the residence halls. In 1989, Chika hired A.C. Beale and Robert McGowan and allowed them to lay a strong foundation for what is now the Night Operations Program.

We have undergone several developmental stages with each juncture exhibiting the growing professionalism of our student staff. The Night Managers monitor the residence halls each night from 11:30PM until 6:15AM and then attend their classes with academic success. Night Managers also have the opportunity to grow their resume should they aspire to a leadership position as Area Supervisor. The average Area Supervisor manages a staff of approximately 65 Night Managers and ten Area Supervisors.

Although Night Operations is one of the highest paid jobs on campus it offers so much more. Leadership skills, personal and professional development and friendships that last a lifetime are just a few of the fringe benefits. Pictures from our first reunion reflect those frienships.
