Upon entering college, you will most likely be granted more freedom than ever before. Illinois State University is committed to sharing knowledge, searching for truth, and developing you as one of its students, so society will prosper as a result of your contribution. So you may fulfill these aspirations, you have been granted the freedoms of inquiry, expression, association, participation in government, and your right to a fair process to address your issues.
However, these are not the only rights and freedoms granted to you as an Illinois State University student - there are more. To make the most of your college and campus living experience, take the time to seek out and understand these freedoms, and always remember - with freedom comes responsibility.
Illinois State University and University Housing Services are well aware of, and will continue to be sensitive to, your rights and freedoms. To ensure your rights are protected, the University has clearly outlined guidelines for behavior, interaction with roommates, and safety. Also, to provide all students with the opportunity to receive an affordable university housing experience, Housing Services has outlined residence hall contract terms and conditions, contract cancellation policies, and housing exemption guidelines. These guidelines have been derived from laws or statutes established by federal, state and local governments, or by the Board of Trustees.
If you realize a violation of University policy is taking place, exit the situation or put an abrupt end to the violation. Avoid situations where policy violations are occurring. If you choose to stay in a room where a violation is occurring, you will be held accountable to some degree.
Faculty, administration and staff share with you the responsibility of developing and enforcing fair and reasonable codes of conduct and behavior. All members of the University community have the right to use the established channels to protect the educational purpose of the institution. As a student, if you are accused of violating regulations, you are guaranteed a fair process. This means that:
