Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

If you require special housing because of a disability or medical condition, please make a request for an accommodation by following the procedures listed below:

  1. Complete the housing application-contract through Welcome2ISU. Students who are not able to use Welcome2ISU or would prefer a paper contract, should contact University Housing Services at (309) 438-8611 (voice) or (309) 438-8177 (TTY) to request a paper form.
  2. Contact the Disability Concerns office by e-mail at The contact must be made by the student. Provide your contact e-mail address and your residence hall and/or lifestyle preference by e-mailing Disability Concerns.  Disability Concerns will provide guidance to obtain the appropriate medical documentation.  If you prefer to speak with someone, the Disability Concerns office can be reached at (309) 438-5853, (309) 438-8620 (TTY).
  3. When you contact Disability Concerns, you will be provided a letter to take to your healthcare professional to obtain the appropriate documentation. This documentation must give information about the disability and support the request for a housing accommodation. Mail or fax documentation from your healthcare professional to Disability Concerns. No requests for special housing will be considered until appropriate documentation is received.
  4. After a student has made a request, provided the appropriate documentation and become a client of Disability Concerns, Disability Concerns will work with the student to determine appropriate placement.
  5. Deadline for submission of medical documentation and preferences is May 1. Confirmation of medical documentation receipt will be sent to you via e-mail. If you have not received confirmation by April 15 it is your responsibility to contact the Disability Concerns office.
  6. Materials received after May 1 will be considered for accommodation needs only. Preferences will not be honored.
  7. The Disability Concerns does not handle roommate requests. Roommate requests should be directed to University Housing Services.
  8. Once your housing assignment has been made, you will be able to view your room assignment and roommate information in late July via the University Housing Services website at www.Housing.ilstu.edu.

Students with disabilities or medical conditions often have concerns in regard to housing. Please consider the following when indicating your housing preferences:

Prompt Return of the Housing Contract

Early submission of the housing contract is crucial to the ability of University Housing Services to honor a request. Thoroughly read the information. Submit the housing contract as soon as possible after you have received it. The earlier the request is submitted, the better the opportunity to have the request filled. Requests for specific rooms, types of rooms, or location of rooms will be honored as available housing space allows.

Air-Conditioning in Residence Halls

All residence halls are air-conditioned only from mid-August to mid-September. If a student has a medical condition that requires year-round air conditioning, the only area where this accommodation can be made is South Campus.

Modifications to Room Structure

If the accommodation request is for a modification to a room such as lower shelves or a doorbell light, the student must contact Disability Concerns by phone or in person and provide the appropriate documentation to support the request.

Themed Living-Learning Communities

If the student has a disability that requires a quiet lifestyle, be sure to check the Residence Hall Information brochure about residence halls offering this type of lifestyle.

Elevators

Residential areas that have elevator access on every floor are South Campus, East Campus, and West Campus. In Watterson Towers, elevators only stop on the third floor of each house.

Bathrooms

The placement of bathrooms and how many residents share one bathroom varies with each residence hall. If a student's disability requires a room that is close to a bathroom or a bathroom that is shared by fewer residents, the student should identify this need to Disability Concerns and provide documentation to support the request.
