Accommodations

Accommodations are available for students with disabilities or medical conditions. Accommodations that may meet the needs of students with such requirements may be, but are not limited to: accessible rooms and facilities for students with physical disabilities; accessible rooms to meet the needs of students with vision disabilities; strobe lights and doorbells with lights for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; or special rooms and facilities for medical needs.

If you require special housing because of a disability or medical condition, please make a request for an accommodation by following the procedures listed below:

  1. Complete your housing contract. In the designated area, write in the disability or medical condition. Return your housing contract to University Housing Services.

  2. Contact Disability Concerns to discuss your housing accommodation needs. The contact must be made by you, the student.

  3. Disability Concerns will provide a letter for you to take to the healthcare professional to obtain documentation. Mail or fax documentation from your healthcare professional to Disability Concerns. This documentation must provide information requested in the letter to support your housing request. No requests for special housing will be considered until appropriate documentation is received.

  4. Provide your contact e-mail address and your residence hall and/or lifestyle preference by e-mailing Disability Concerns .

  5. The Disability Concerns Office does not handle roommate requests.  Roommate requests should be directed to University Housing Services.

  6. Deadline for submission of medical documentation and preferences is May 1. Confirmation of medical documentation receipt will be sent to you via e-mail. If you have not received confirmation by April 15 it is your responsibility to contact Disability Concerns.

  7. Materials received after May 1 will be considered for accommodation needs only. Preferences will not be honored.

  8. Once your housing assignment has been made, you will receive a notice from University Housing Services.

  9. Students with disabilities or medical concerns often have concerns in regard to housing. Please consider the following when indicating your housing preferences:

Prompt Return of the Housing Contract

Although there is no deadline for returning the application-contract, there is a May 1 preferred filing date.  For optimum assurance of receiving a room, your housing and dining application-contract must be postmarked by May 1.  Application-contracts are accepted on a "first-come, first-served" basis and admission to the University is not a guarantee of housing. Early submission of the housing contract is crucial to the ability of University Housing Services to honor a request. Housing spaces are filled as contracts are received. Thoroughly read the information. Submit the housing contract as soon as possible after you have received it. The earlier the request is submitted, the better the opportunity to have the request filled. Requests for specific rooms, types of rooms, or location of rooms will be honored as available housing space allows.

Air-Conditioning in Residence Halls

Some residence halls are air-conditioned from mid-August to mid-September. Those areas of campus with air-conditioned halls are South Campus, East Campus, West Campus, and Watterson Towers. If a student has a medical condition that requires year-round air conditioning, the only area where this accommodation can be made is South Campus.

Modifications to Room Structure

If the accommodation request is for a modification to a room such as lower shelves or a doorbell light, the student must contact Disability Concerns by phone or in person and provide the appropriate documentation to support the request.

Lifestyle Floors

If the student has a disability or a medical concern that requires a quiet lifestyle, be sure to check the Residence Hall Information brochure about residence halls offering this type of lifestyle.

Elevators

If a student's disability or medical concern requires that an elevator be available, it is important to remember that not all residence halls have elevator access or elevators that stop at every floor. Residential areas that have elevator access on every floor are South Campus, East Campus, and West Campus. Watterson Towers has elevator access, but the elevators do not stop on every floor. In Watterson Towers, elevators only stop on the third floor of each house. Central Campus does not have elevators.

Bathrooms

The placement of bathrooms and how many residents share one bathroom varies with each residence hall. If a student's disability or medical concern requires a room that is close to a bathroom or a bathroom that is shared by fewer residents, the student should identify this need to Disability Concerns and provide documentation to support the request.
